This edition of our news includes:
a) lots to help you plan your grocery list, and
b) information on so many events this weekend that you’ll have no excuse to stay home, unless you’re too busy canning, pickling, freezing, drying or eating all the things you brought home because of part a).

Kyle from Everdale writes: “New this week: watermelon, daikon and green luobo radishes and some acorn and delicata squash! Also, more of our super sweet carrots and beets, salad turnips, red radishes, red and yellow onions, shallots, leeks, tomatoes, ground cherries, herbs and loads of salad and cooking greens.
We’re busy getting ready for our 10th annual CarrotFest, happening this Sunday from 12-4. It’s FREE, seriously kid friendly and everyone is welcome. There is a shuttle being organized by the Big Carrot in Toronto for people who want to come check out the farm but don’t have any wheels. Hope to see some of you there!

The Ujamaa Farm Collective and other market farms have a good supply of this essential ingredient, which has been called “as good as ten mothers”. Find out why at the Toronto Garlic Festival this Sunday from 9 to 5 at Artscape’s Wychwood Barns.

You’ll be glad to know that both Sosnicki Organic Produce and Marvellous Edibles have apples ripening, and Avalon Orchards has asked Ted Thorpe to represent them at the market, so in the coming weeks we should have quite a few varieties. Neighbours Liz Martin and Wayne Ellwood will also make a guest appearance with their crop later this month to broaden the selection.

In the meantime, the City Cider Festival is on at Spadina Museum from noon to 5 pm this Sunday.

20160901_214959Not to brag too much, but instead of counting sheep at night, I’m now dreaming of the 3 kinds of sauce, plus whole tomatoes, oven-dried ones, and roasted ratatouille I made from Shared Harvest‘s San Marzano tomatoes and tucked away for winter meals. Sandra says they are bringing a few more this week, so you, too, can make sauce to build a dream on!

On Saturday the 17th, there’s a 3 course dinner and Barn Blues Session featuring Suzie Vinnick at the farm. More information at sharedharvestfarm.ca

Forbes Wild Foods reports: “We will have fresh chanterelle, hedgehog and sweet tooth mushrooms”.

Kind Organics is adjusting slowly to our brand new farm. (We moved in on July 1st) We are ironing out the wrinkles and are pleased to announce that the sunflower sprouts are once again happy and providing higher yields and lasting longer. As a reward for all those who stuck it through, we are having a deal on certain sprouts. They will be 1 for $5, 2 for $8 and 3 for $10.

We are still short on wheatgrass but with the weather cooling down it is doing much better.
Sandra and Tamas are working hard on the farm to get the raised beds in by winter so that we can grow all those lovely salad greens all year long. Thanks for everyone’s support this season.”

If you haven’t seen a mention of all the vegetables you’d like yet, here’s a list of a few more that will be available: corn and peppers, zucchini and potatoes, cabbages, lettuce, beans, eggplant, kale, cauliflower….Should I go on?

Donny Day will be visiting with kitchari again.

Hobo Soul, aka Rachel Melas and her partner Conny, will be treating us to tunes. You might know them as the rhythm section of Cajun band Swamperella or the accordion and mandolin in klezmer band the Horables. They play a LONG LIST of folk and traditional music, American Oldtime, klezmer, Cajun, jugband favorites, and calypso gypsy jazz.

Our StoryTent is still a lovely option for kids attending the market.  Jade Guthrie and her team of dedicated volunteers love helping kids enjoy reading.
