Every so often the calendar gives us an extra Thursday, and since June is such a wonderful month for fresh food, we’ve got extra good things to tell you about, and specials, too:
Debbie Wiecha‘s truck will be full of beautiful cargo when she heads in from Niagara Lavender Farm: English Lavender, sublime raspberries and lots of sweet dark cherries.
All Sorts Acre is baaa-ck! We are excited to have sheep’s milk ice cream at the market again. Jennifer will also have wool and lots of lamb.

Jason Kun of Island Oysters is bringing the fresh taste of the sea to market with great Canadian oysters from 2 coasts and 4 provinces. Here’s the menu:

To say thanks for coming (even if we get a bit of maritime weather) Jason has decided to offer buck-a-shuck Malpeques from 3:30 to 4:30 and 5:30-6:30!
Roman Plawiuk’s deliciously local Huron Sun sunflower oil will be available this week. It’s excellent for cooking, baking, salads and other uses, and keeps very well in the fridge, so plan to get enough to last until Roman returns at the end of the summer.
Luisa Golias, who is developing a new food business with Toronto’s Food Starters, will be visiting with her Quinoa Power Flats and frozen gluten-free empanadas, as well as hot and mild salsas. She’ll have samples to introduce you to all her products.
Everdale news: “We had hail on Sunday that did a fair amount of damage, but thankfully there weren’t any major losses. it’s a good thing our winter squash is still covered as leaves that were exposed are not looking very happy right now. So if you find some dents and scratches on some vegetables just know that they’ve had better weekends!
New this week: zucchini, head lettuce, sugar snap peas, bunched kale and some fava beans. We’ll also have herbs, lots of greens, carrots, radish, salad turnips, kohlrabi, green onions, scapes and the last of our asparagus for the season.” Kyle
The Sosnicki Organic Produce list: Strawberries (Jessie says ‘the late variety is tasting pretty awesome!’), Zucchini, Basil, Peas (both shelling and sugar snap), Carrots & Beets from the greenhouse, and Lettuces (including those gorgeous Mini Lettuces) and they may dig some fresh potatoes next week!
Other produce highlights include: abundant garlic scapes, many varieties of lettuce, basil and other fresh herbs, oyster & shiitake mushrooms and more.
Fressy Bessie has lots of Oh Canada fruit pops (organic strawberry and pear), and you’ll find other celebratory treats, too.
Urban Harvest had to cancel today as they’re trying to finish moving out of their Downsview greenhouse by a deadline. For anyone looking for a bargain, they are having a $1 plant sale at their shop (Bloor just west of Lansdowne in the Bee Store across from Val Vil).
Looking for a Good Neighbour
If you come often, you may recognize Stan, who discovered the market last fall and has been attending steadily ever since. A while back, Stan celebrated his 92nd birthday with us. He really enjoys his market visits, but recently he has been finding the trip home with his groceries challenging. Is there someone who could lend a hand, either by giving Stan a lift back, or by dropping his small buggy off at his home near Perth and Ernest (a few blocks northwest of Lansdowne and Bloor)? Thanks to the volunteers who have been helping Nikki Daley to prep Boomerang Bags. Drop in or pitch in if you have time; there will be a crew working in the rinkhouse during the market. We hope to have enough bag-making kits and finished bags ready to do more show-and-tell next week.
