Hello Market Friends:
Ten days ago the new Canada Food Guide was introduced, and the comments haven’t stopped since. Impacts on healthy eating are the tip of the iceberg. The Financial Post called the new guide ‘just the latest morsel of low hanging fruit plucked and used to drive a wedge in the Canadian agricultural sector’. Reconciliation, cultural diversity, income inequality and the environmental impacts of dietary choices are all being discussed in light of this document. This is good; there’s a lot more than just recipes that we need to talk about. But the simplest advice offered is good, too: Cook more often. Enjoy your food. Eat meals with others. Much better than telling us how many slices of bread we need.

We’re carrying on with seasonal eating in spite of the seasonal weather, and we hope you’ll put on your best woolies and venture out. Unfortunately, when Jens set out this morning, he found all the roads were closed, so Marvellous Edibles will be absent, as will Spade & Spoon.

Heidrun sent a list of the loaves she is baking. She says the wood is very dry and burns beautifully, warming up the baker on those trips to the oven! Here’s what you will have to choose from: rye, caraway multigrain, artisan multigrain, spelt walnut, cranberry walnut, kamut, rosemary, multigrain Italian, raisin, and a few little loaves of rice flour bread.

Welcome back to DeFloured! Many fans will be awfully glad to get their favourite gluten-free goodies again.

Stock up on honey and eggs. Bees Universe is taking a holiday next week, despite HoneyMan John‘s objections.

This is week ten of our winter loyalty program, so perfect attendees can start collecting their rewards. Thanks for coming out! Spring will be here before we know it (haha-but look at those kale babies up top and dream).

Note that the whole market will be in the rinkhouse (north end) this week. If you run out of cash, we’ve got you covered. Ask Nicole or myself to use the Square until our ATM returns in the spring.
See you at the market!
Anne Freeman

P.S. Reminders that LandMade, featuring local wool producers. is on this Sunday at The Gladstone, and the Public Meeting about the Northwest Corner Project is on February 6th.
