Let’s get greener!

Let's get greener!

Hello Market Friends:

Some exciting news for you – it’s Organic Week! Last week we mentioned that (starting September 1st), you could enter the Organic Council of Ontario’s Why I love Ontario Organic contest, to win market bucks and other prizes.

And there’s more! This weekend the OCO is hosting a couple of events, (and one’s in Toronto!) First, a walking food tour on Roncesvalles on Saturday, September

7th, with organic product samplings from five retailers:

Second, an organic wine tour in Niagara Region on Sunday, September 8th, where guests will explore vineyards, learn about organic wineries and taste local organic wines:

Ok, now back at Dufferin Grove..

News from the Dufferin Park bakers:

Sourdoughs: rye, caraway-multigrain, cornmeal, potato-rosemary, olive-onion. Artisans: baguette, multigrain, cranberry-walnut, kamut, pumpkin seed, spelt-walnut. Italians: rosemary, multigrain, whole wheat, raisin

From Sosnicki Organic Produce: “For Dufferin, all the good September things! Oodles of fresh Green Beans! Romas by the case! ($30 for 25lbs – email me at jb@sosnickiorganics.com to get on the list or take your chances at market!) Watermelons, Cantaloupes, still digging fresh Potatoes, fall Cabbages, Tomatoes, Tomatoes, Tomatoes!! Kale, Garlic, Onions, new patch Beets with awesome tops, Eggplants, Hot Peppers, (red peppers coming soon, still growing/ripening!) And maybe Carrots if we have time! Exciting, huh?!!

And if you wanted more yummy oysters, (because who doesn’t?), you’re in luck! Jason will be with us again this week, with a wonderful variety to choose from.

Helen Mends will be offering another in her series of workshops: “Poppies for the Planet: divert textile scraps from landfill by turning them into flowers”. Bring Helen your garments in need of mending, too.

Andrea Murphy will be coming to juggle and hula hoop from 3-6pm, with anyone who wants to learn or join in.

Toronto Public Library will also be at market from 4-6pm, to talk about upcoming fall programs at the library.

Ali Harris of Fish Shak will be absent this week, and sadly Niagara Lavender’s season has come to a close for this year. However September, as we know, is a great month for good food – lots in store!

See you at the market!

-Nicole Jacobs
