Another fabulous week gone by, as we continue roaring through October! And for the most part, the month has been fairly kind to us, weather-wise – yippee! ????
But sadly, we’re already at the penultimate market this week – meaning our last outdoor market is Thursday, October 26th, (3-7pm, in Dufferin Grove Park.)
So that’s only two remaining Thursdays of “roasting while you shop”. The veggie in our feature photo for example, is shishito peppers. I roasted these last week (along with some tasty garlic), for sampling. The shishitos were from Knuckle Down Farm, (who are unfortunately away this week), but Aldergrove Farm will definitely have them, (and the garlic too! 🙂 So whether you choose shishitos, or something else entirely, there are lots of options. Pictured below for example, is just part of the wondrous bounty from Kooner Farms.
Indoor Plans for the Market..
For some of you, this will be slightly repetitive, but please bear with me. So as I’ve mentioned (in my last couple newsletters), we do plan to continue the market throughout the winter. This would be the clubhouse, at the north end of the park. However, please know that unfortunately there will be “a gap”, from when the outdoor season ends (October 26th), and when the indoor begins. This could be anywhere from two weeks to one month, but we are hoping it’s not that long! The gap is dependent on the progress of the construction the clubhouse itself. I will continue with weekly newsletters, (and instagram updates) throughout the “down time”. There are also vendors like Nith Valley Organics, who plan to offer weekly delivery options during this period – please stay tuned. Ok, that’s all I’ve got for now folks – please hang in there with us! ????
Vendor News (for October 19th..)
So much happening! I’ll start with the pop-ups – we’ve got three! First up, Plantacia Foods, (last at the market back in August.) They will once again, have a tasty selection of plant-based, vegan snacks to choose from.
Lampampa also returns to us with delicious dried mangos, from their family farm in Peru – stock up while you can!
And our final pop-up this week is Arth TO. They are once again, offering “tasty, vegetarian dishes from the South of India.”
Other vendors that you can only catch this week: TC Tibetan Momo, Hammerhead Fish, and Green Florin. These vendors were all bi-weekly, so this is your last chance to catch them this season! (Scroll for the full vendor list.)
And please visit the Clay and Paper Theatre stall, as they would love to tell you all about NIGHT OF DREAD! This year’s event takes place on October 28th, at Christie Pits Park. Last year’s event (held at Dovercourt Park) was such a blast!
Dessert-Making at the Park Oven!
Yes, it’s true! There will be a “garlic-dessert demo” this week, being led by Peter McClusky. This will take place by the park oven, at 5pm, (October 19th.)
Some of you took part in Peter’s Fall Planting Workshop last week (pictured above) – and thanks for that! 🙂 It was a great success, and Peter thanks Dufferin Grovers for the very warm welcome, and stellar enthusiasm he was met with!
So this week Peter plans to show off the robust flavour of Ontario garlic, including its high brix (sugar) content. To quote Peter: “Garlicky desserts are a real thing. Toronto Garlic Festival has a long history of working with local pastry chefs, ice cream makers and chocolatiers.” Be sure to take part in this, and try some delicious samples!
“Veggie” Spotlight..
Yummy Ginger Gold Apples from Reyes Farms. Yes, I know, I’m kinda cheating here, (as they’re not actually a veggie) – but I think it’ll be worth it. 🙂 It also allows me to “announce” that this week, Reyes will have their delicious apple cider – FINALLY!!! ????
Ok, so we know that Ontario apples are obviously the perfect snack all on their own – especially at this time of year. And last week I even decided to “dessertify” them. Pies and crumbles probably come to mind first, but I did an even simpler version – just sliced and baked. I just dashed some cinnamon on them, added a little melted butter, laid them on a parchment sheet, and that was that! No sugar needed. Just ten minutes per side, in a 350-degree-oven – super easy! I used coconut butter instead, and topped them with a little lemon zest (once out of the oven), but to each their own. Ok, have fun!
Clothing Swap October 26th!
So not this Thursday, but next, be ready to clean out your closets, or perhaps add to! 🙂 Not to mention, swaps are a great way to contribute to waste reduction. And (fyi), this one is for adults, (as opposed to the kids swap, which we did back in June and September.)
Monique of Bruized, has graciously offered to put his on for us. Some of you may be familiar with her delicious snack foods – but if not: “Bruized is on a mission to upcycle imperfect produce into healthy eats. 100% Plant-based, All-Natural, and Handmade in Toronto.” So how fitting that Monique is organizing our clothing swap – get it? hee hee
Hooray for Market Music! ????
A big thanks to Jerrod and Hiro of “Fat Quarter”, who kept us entertained with such amazing sounds – thanks so much you two, and come back anytime! xo
Ok, thanks a bunch for your support folks – and see you Thursday..
-Nicole
