On the Niagara Escarpment there are White cedar trees that are hundreds of years old. They are small, wizened trees clinging to the edge of the rock face. A seed nestles into the smallest of soil dusted cracks and sprouts roots. The roots spread, enabling the tree to adhere to the rock face. There the trees appear to grow on bald rock.
