The produce lists say it all. It’s high season! The freshest organic harvests in the land will be coming to the market:
Shared Harvest Highlights: “We have fresh cooking onions, parsley, salad mix, purslane, lambsquarters (move over spinach), garlic, radish, turnips, kale, chard, callaloo, lettuce heads, ground cayenne powder and deep red pac choi.” Kevin
The Everdale List: “This week we’ve got our first beets from the field! Also lots of greens, herbs, carrots, radish, salad turnip, green onions, head lettuce, kale, chard, peas and zucchini.” Kyle and Wolf
These photos show Everdale’s storage onions and winter squash beds with rye seeded in the pathways, and their new ground [or air?] cherry experiment. “We’re growing them in hanging baskets to make use of the vertical space in the greenhouse and save on harvest time as that stretch of row cover should catch the fruits as they fall off the plants. That’s the plan at least.”
Sosnicki Organic Produce Report: CUCUMBERS!! We’ll have big ones, small ones, medium ones, all kinds! They are our favourite variety “Eureka” from William Dam Seeds. We use them for pickling and fresh eating galore! Small, tender seeds perfect for cuc summer salads. We’ll have lots of 3 litre basket amounts so folks can grab a few larger amounts of the size they like for pickling. The patch looks promising and we have a late patch too, but please get them while you can as you never know with organic cucs how long our patch will last. These have proudly been sprayed with absolutely nothing!
FRESH DUG POTATOES! They are sized nicely this week so everyone should be pleased with the size and quality of these yellowed fleshed Yukons! We’ve been eating them daily boiled with butter. Large baskets and quarts available.
CHERRY AND GRAPE TOMATOES! Not oodles yet – but if you’re an early shopper you’ll nab some!
Oodles of Patty Pan Zucs, yellow Zucs, romanesca Italian Zucs, Basil plants, Mini Lettuces, Snap Peas and fresh Garlic bulbs! The flavours of summer are riding high this week!! Cheers, Ben, Jess, Joe and Crew
Knuckle Down Farm News Blast: “Last week the beets we brought were sold out in the first ten minutes of market so we will do our best to bring more this week! We will also have some fresh garlic and dill for the fist time this week along with the usual stack of lettuces and other colourful greens.” Jenny
Niagara Lavender Farm Forecast: Debbie says she’ll have a nice load of red and black raspberries to bring.
Urban Harvest is taking some time away after a busy seeds & seedlings season. They’ll be gone for July, but back in August with body care, soil amendments and seeds.
Welcome to our newest vendor, Shaina from Root Care Kitchen, who prepares unique vegan and gluten-free, Filipine-inspired foods. Sha is joining our rotating crew of prepared food vendors on the second Thursday of the month.
Other rotating spot vendors: Robinson Bread and Frogpond Farm Organic Winery.
There will also be meats for the barbeque, many splendid cheeses, honey, eggs, hot and cold treats, sourdough breads, coffee and chocolate, fresh and dried mushrooms, long cool drinks, and plenty of fun.
See you at the market!
Anne Freeman
P.S. Don’t forget your MARKET KIT: Tote bags, produce bags, containers to use or to return, your own cup, and anything else you need to aim for a zero-waste day!
