Roots, Shrooms, and Macaroons!

Roots, Shrooms, and Macaroons!

I’m happy to report that our Vendor List will be a little longer this week!

Bees Universe has a working vehicle again so John really will be back with honey and eggs.

Jennifer from All Sorts Acre has been very busy with early lambing, including a lot of multiple births, but she’ll find somebody else to feed the wee ‘bottle lambs’ that are getting extra TLC in her kitchen and head down to market. LATE-BREAKING NEWS: So much for the best-laid plans, more ewes in labour, Jennifer is needed in the barn!

The risk of storms off Lake Erie is lower, so Sean should be in from Lovell Springs Trout Farm, with fresh and smoked fish. Note: you can buy the fresh trout in filets or whole. There will be some pin bones in the fish, but Sean can tell you how to manage them easily, or for a little higher price per pound he can remove them for you.

Seth is away, but Janine from Forbes Wild Foods will be bringing Black Trumpet, Hedgehog and Yellow foot chanterelle mushrooms to the market. Like last year these are coming up from Oregon, brought to Forbes by their Quebec partners.

While Seth is away, Blythe will be stamping Loyal Eaters cards (and sampling delicious jams and chutneys) at the Spade & Spoon table.

2017-02-13 23.25.04DeFloured did a stellar job of making Valentines happy, but Krista is not finished yet. February will be much better with a few of the organic macaroons she’s whipping up with Country Meadows eggs. She’s also cracking open the jars of cherries she stewed last summer and combining them with Monforte’s chevre to make sweet galettes.

Kyle has returned from his travels, and sent this list from Everdale: “This week we have winter spinach, tender baby kale, field kale, lots of green onions, leeks, yellow onions, dry beans, carrots, beets, celeriac, parsnips and other roots!”

Laura from Pine River Organic Farm is bringing in beautiful vegetables, too, which brings me to my current favourite toy, a SPIRALIZER. No, I am not being paid by a kitchen gadget company, and no, this is not the name of a hit song from a few decades ago by Peter Tosh. Maybe you have one already, but if you don’t, one of these tools makes it so much fun to make beautiful winter salads, veggie chips, and stir-frys that you’ll find yourself eating a lot more winter vegetables! Be sure to get any kids around to help ‘spiralize’, and they’ll be gobbling the results.

I love multi-coloured slaws with celery root, red or yellow beets, watermelon radish, and carrots, or whatever other roots I have on hand. A quick dressing of cider vinegar, olive oil and a little honey is all that’s needed, though of course you can add Everdale’s green onions this week, sprouts from Kind Organics, and anything else you fancy.

If you’re curious, I’ll do a little demo for you.
See you at the market!
Anne Freeman
