We had a very festive start to spring last week. Hope you got to try some ‘sap tea’ and samples of good things from the vendors to whet your appetite for the season ahead. Hope you also got to meet some of the Plan B Band pictured above: an improvisational, multi-player, evolving, sometimes tuneful ensemble that’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys!
Everything wants to sprout now! These onions made a nice surprise addition to our salad even if they weren’t supposed to be green ones, but
the farmers are running out of storage vegetables. Jens from Marvellous Edibles told me they have to be sure to hold back enough potatoes of all varieties for planting, but he still has a pretty good selection of most root crops. Wolf from Everdale wrote to say they can’t come in this week because they just don’t have enough left. Not to worry! The greenhouses at Kind Organics are full of delicious things, and Plan B will help us out with a little infill while we wait for spring crops to catch up.
The chickens are laying well now, and spring milk is becoming abundant for fresh cheeses. Ruth Klassen, the amazing woman behind Monforte Dairy, hopes to attend this time. Getting a ‘cheese tour’ from Ruth is always delightful.
ChocoSol will be back, and there could be a few Easter Bunnies in need of good homes….
Heidrun is baking some challah bread in the park ovens, as well as all the other favourites. Come early for the best selection.
See you at the market!
