Play Hooky on the Rink

Play Hooky on the Rink
Last week it could have been November; this week it’s heaven! We have the perfect reason to skip out of any indoor duties and take a walk in the park. Come on out, it’s good for you!

Beautiful fall harvests from the fields and the woods.

Abundant selection and excellent quality continue from our growers. Consider mellow roast veggies, full-flavoured salads, a spicy fry-up, hearty stew, or a barbeque this weekend.

Angelos will be at the market this time, and then away on his annual olive-harvesting trip to Greece for the following three weeks. Be sure to get plenty of oil, cheese, and your other favourite Country Meadows products to tide you over.

Another suggestion: round up all your dull knives and bring them for sharpening by Mike Fohr. Depending on the December weather, this could be our last chance for the year.

Urban Harvest (Colette), Ying Ying Soy, and the JK Fries lads return, and–more good news–Jason Kun will be in attendance with fresh oysters.

Andrew McIlmoyle of Waymac Mushroom Farm wrote to say that he’s going flat out to finish his field work this week and will have to miss the market. When he’s not looking after the mushrooms, he’s a hay producer, and you know the saying about hay and sunshine.

It’s not 100% certain, but Pine River may also be absent.

Evelyns Crackers usually attends the market in spring and summer only, but they’re coming for a special visit this week.

From Natasha Akiwenzie: “Smoked the fish and Andrew has nets to lift.  All is looking grand for us to be down on Thursday.”

We’ll also have guest vendors, Donny Day and Ryan Kelly of The Kind Kitchen, who have asked to show you the kitchari they’ve been producing. If that’s a new word for you, “Kitchari is a perfect protein and whole food designed to entirely feed and detox the human mind, body and soul.  Made from brown basmati rice, mung beans, coconut oil, and a special blend of spices, it is a complete healing food, rich in highly digestible protein, minerals, and vitamins. We use only the highest quality organic ingredients, including local market vegetables, fair-trade spices & virgin cold pressed coconut oil.”

Warm congratulations to Blythe, Adam, and Sebastian of Spade & Spoon on the arrival of their new family member, Eloise Iva Anne Smith. Isn’t she lovely?

Under sun, clouds, or those excellent hockey lights, you’ll find us on the rink this week and next, when we’ll celebrate the market’s 13th anniversary with some of the finest cake in the land, and special announcements too! On November 19th, we’ll move into the rinkhouse and garage, with a few vendors outdoors along the west side. Lots more great local eating ahead.

See you at the market!
Anne Freeman
