Celebrating a Lucky 13 Years!

Hello Market Friends:

Another market anniversary has rolled round! Let’s celebrate 13 years of friendships, learning, growth, overcoming challenges, and mighty fine eating! Thank you to all the farmers, vendors, staff and customers who make this market not only possible, but truly special.

Leslie Lindsay has been busy baking cakes for the occasion, and it’s too hard to judge which will be most delicious: the market’s traditional–and now legendary–vegan carrot cake, the deep, dark beet-chocolate cake, or the gluten-free parsnip cake which wins over every skeptic. We’ll be passing out pieces all through the market, so you can choose your favourite.

We’ll also be handing out something new, Loyal Eaters Cards. With the indoor season approaching, we’d like to encourage everybody to keep up that Thursday routine of heading to market, and reward steady attendees. Pick up a card, and from November 19th to March 31st, every time you visit and spend $10, you’ll get a stamp for that day. When you’ve got 10 stamps on your card, you’ll receive a handsome reward: $10 in Dufferin market bucks to spend, a bag of fresh Kind Greens, and entry in a draw to win one of three gift baskets full of goodies from our vendors! We can tell you more at market, or you can read the details on…(drum roll please)…

OUR NEW WEBSITE!
13 years ago, the market started out as one of the food-related ‘experiments’ of the Centre for Local Research into Public Space, and one of the many ways in which it has benefited from the ideas, expertise and energy of CELOS has been web support. I couldn’t count how many times Jutta Mason, Henrik Bechmann, Aseel Alnajim and others pitched in to ensure that market news and information was available, and I’m very grateful to them all.

A while back we realized that the ‘experiment’ had grown up enough that the market should become more independent, and one aspect of that has been building the market’s own website. Allow me to introduce you to: www.dufferingrovemarket.ca !

We’ll be adding to the site over the coming weeks, but we couldn’t wait any longer to share it with you. Huge thanks to our talented and patient web designer (and Knuckle Down Farm team member) Peter Wills of  word&data.

Time to share a bit of news from the vendors:A reminder that Angelos (Country Meadows) is away on his annual olive-harvesting trip to Greece, returning in time for the first market in December.

From Natasha Akiwenzie: “We will be down with smoked and hopefully fresh depending on whatAndrew catches.”

This is the Sosnickis’ last trip in for the season. I’ve put in a request for extra potatoes so we can squirrel some away. Here’s the list for this week: “Ben will be bringing great stuff from the field still: fresh harvested Leeks and Root Celery, beautiful Broccoli, Beets with tops still, Kale and Swiss Chard and perhaps some small Cauliflowers! Cabbages, Potatoes, Onions and sweet sweet Carrots from storage! Cheers, enjoy the harvest!” Ben, Jess, Sadie and Nate

It’s also the last week for Best Baa/Ewenity Dairy. Load up on cheese and yogurt!

John of Bees Universe will have the barbeque going, cooking ‘mich’,  traditional Romanian beef and pork treats.

Ying Ying Soy will be absent, as they’re going through a major move which has interrupted production.Ming will keep us posted on progress.

Fantastic veggie selection again: a rainbow of roots, splendid cool-weather greens, and many varieties of squash.

See you at the Lucky 13 market!
