Think Green!

Think green!

Last Sunday the school parking lot down my street was like the centre of an anthill. Neighbours full of purpose were coming and going in all directions with buggies and bins, digging their way through a huge pile of compost. So many people with the urge to get things growing! It’s my favourite time of year. If you haven’t started gardening yet, our vendors can help.

2016-04-24 14. 01. 14Angelos (Country Meadows) has started bringing beautiful plants: herbs, kale and strawberries tended by his wife Linda, and hardened off so they are ready for the outdoors.

Urban Harvest has the loveliest old-fashioned pansies, as well as mints and other herbs, and of course LOTS of choice heirloom seed varieties for your ranch or your windowbox.

We had hoped to see Jenny and Peter from Knuckle Down Farm, but their van met up with a tree (no injuries, fortunately) and this has slowed them down by a week.

Tawse Winery will be in attendance with their organically produced VQA wines.

This week’s special from Best Baa is $1 for 175 g cups of yogurt!

Andrew Akiwenzie has a nasty visit with the dentist to get through, so he’ll return with fish next time.

Krista Tobias told me that while Chris was busy working on his tan, she spent much of her vacation dreaming up good things to bake, so there are happy days ahead at the DeFloured table. Gluten-free fans should be sure to try Heidrun‘s test loaf samples at the Zamboni Cafe. She’s been trying different recipes, and last week’s was the best yet.

2016-04-25 07. 49. 24Damon Dewsbury from Culture City has new packaging for many of his products, and if you need additional instructions, he’ll be pleased to provide them.

Special Notice that May 5th (next Thursday), will truly be the launch of our spring market. Please help to spread the word! Bring your friends, and welcome back many of the vendors we haven’t seen since last fall. There will be bunched baby vegetables from Sosnicki Organic Produce, tasty snacks and meals from Earth & City and other vendors, gorgeous blooms from Floralora, and maybe even oysters!

Looking forward to seeing you,

Anne Freeman

P.S. A friendly offer to dog owners from neighbour Sarah El Sherbini:
“I’m the owner-operator of PetsGo!, a professional dog walking and pet sitting service in the Dufferin Grove area. I’ve been attending the Market since I moved into the area, and I just love the year-round selection of organic produce and yummy treats! I want to thank the market-goers for supporting local businesses by offering them $25 off their first booking.” You can reach Sarah at 647-971-4800 or visit her website: petsgopetcare.ca
