I Eat my Peas with Honey

I eat my peas with honey

Wiecha bee

It will be the longest Thursday of the year, but you can look forward to bedtime if you take home some of Niagara Lavender Farm’s sweet-dream inducing bunches. Debbie Wiecha wrote to say the fields smell wonderful and are abuzz with bees. So nice to have Debbie back at Dufferin!

Welcome back to Shared Harvest Community Farm, too! Kevin Hamilton and crew will have a good pile of certified organic vegetables and herbs, and some good tunes to go along with the food, from visiting blues musician Ronnie Shellist.

Congratulations to the Sosnickis on the happy Fathers’ Day arrival of Jonah Benjamin Michael! Busy though they are with babies, the fields on the farm look bountiful. Joe & the crew will have strawberries, peas, beets and more for us.

Urban Harvest will be winding down plant sales and are offering all plants this week at 50% off.
Will the long fall predicted, it isn’t too late to plant.” [Did someone really say that f-word?]

Vehicle calamity kept Life in Homemade away last time, but Teneile and Rebecca will be back with great gluten-free breads and other goodies.

We have a special visitor, Roman Plawiuk, attending to introduce Huron Sun sunflower oil, which is made exclusively from certified organic seeds grown in Ontario and cold-pressed in Barrie. ‘It has a light, buttery flavour, and the variety of sunflower seed used is exceptionally high in healthy fats and is full of natural source Vitamin E.’

Don’t forget to bring your dull knives for sharpening by Mike Fohr. He’ll be away next week.

The Best Baa specials are great! All soft cheeses are on sale for $7, or 2 for $5. Check out our bargain eats guide on the map at the market info table for lots of sweet deals.

Everdale peas

I eat my peas with honey
I’ve done it all my life
It makes the peas taste funny
But it keeps them on the knife

Here are a couple of easy recipes to help you enjoy the hot weather:

Panzanella Salad with Peas
Croutons: Cube 3 cups full of stale (or fresh) crusty bread (of whatever kind you like) and bake or toast it in a frying pan with crushed garlic, olive oil, salt and a few sprigs of of parsley or other herbs. This can be done ahead. Toss the croutons with:

1 1/2 cups diced soft cheese
10 coarsely chopped mint leaves
1 1/2 cups fresh peas
1/2 a cucumber, diced
2 Tbsp olive oil
2 Tbsp red wine or other good vinegar
salt and pepper

Let stand for half an hour, mixing occasionally. Toss with 4 cups of arugula or salad mix, and serve.

Honey Water
Put 2-3 Tbsp honey in a large jar or glass jug and add a cup of warm–but not hot–water. Stir to dissolve the honey, and add a Tablespoon of cinnamon. Fill the jar with water, stir and chill. Dilute further as desired. A lovely, reviving beverage on a hot day!

See you at the market,

The Vendor List
Note: With plastic replacing cash in a lot of wallets, customers often ask about payment options at the market. You may not be aware that many of our vendors can accept credit or debit, so I’m putting asterisks beside their names this time and adding information to our map at the market. (This list is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate, and cash is always welcome!)
