Hello Market Friends:
Three cheers for the support for biodiversity that is provided by organic farmers, and three more for all of you who have added pollinator-friendly plants to your gardens! Thanks to market fan Chang Liu for sending this image of a monarch caterpillar feasting on milkweed. Find out what can still be planted for a great fall garden at the Urban Harvest table this week. Extend the season! Colette and her team are also hoping to have more body care now that some ingredients have finally arrived.
Niagara Lavender Farm’s Littlest Peach says it’s going to be a BIG week for peaches!
BIG red tomatoes, BIG orange marigolds and veggies of just about every size, shape and colour that you could dream of are coming in abundance too. (Okay, one more week’s wait for corn on the cob!)
Here’s a sample from Sosnicki Organic Produce: “Lotsa Tomatoes, lotsa Cucumbers! (Pickling and slicers), the first small trickle of Melons, fresh dug Potatoes, Sweet Onions, Carrots, Herbs, Garlic, Kale, Cabbage, Green and Yellow Beans, Zucchini and big Jalapenos!!
We’ve all been missing Blythe Weber‘s sunny presence at the Spade & Spoon table as well as her delicious preserves. It has been a most demanding summer for Blythe and family, moving to their forever farm, turning a sugar shack into a home, commuting to their old growing location for one last season, and keeping up with pickle production. Blythe misses us too, though, so she is coming to market this week! Lots to catch up on, and lots of pantries to restock with Spade & Spoon favourites.
Heidrun‘s Dufferin Park Bakers Bread List:
Sourdoughs: rye, caraway-multigrain, cornmeal, potato-rosemary, olive-onion
Artisans: baguette, multigrain, cranberry-walnut, pumpkin seed, spelt-walnut
Italians: rosemary, multigrain, whole wheat, raisin
Treat yourself to some creative time spent with others at The Art Hive.
Rotating vendors All Sorts Acre, TC’s Tibetan Momos, Reimer Vineyards and Lapapampa Mangoes will be with us this time.
We’ll also have a visit from the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup team, a national conservation partnership between Ocean Wise and WWF-Canada. They’re coming to talk about marine plastic pollution, maintaining a healthy community environment, and what you can do to help. Their mission is to inspire Canadians to keep all shorelines free of litter.
See you at the market!
Anne Freeman
