Good news and good wishes from our vendors to you:
“Happy June! This is a very exciting month for Sosnicki Organic Produce as we bring on a new strawberry crop! Literally, the actual berries AND another strawberry baby!! (Jessie is due June 14th with baby #3). In anticipation, we have created two blog posts with lots of pictures to get everyone up to date with happenings on the farm. Please check out our Field Update post with pics we took last evening. See the fields, how we are growing this year, how we keep them so nice and clean and what will be coming to market in the coming weeks. Located here: sosnickiorganicproduce.blogspot.ca/2016/06/june-1st-field-update
We’ve created a Strawberry Blog too, so you can see pics and learn how we grew these berries arriving in the next couple of weeks! The process started last year and is a. lot. of. work. Check it out here: sosnickiorganicproduce.blogspot.ca/2016/05/our-organic-strawberries-2016
While Ben keeps busy in the field planting, continue to welcome Joe at market with our Salad Mix, Beets with beautiful tops, and Turnips with beautiful tops (very healthy too!!). Steam all those greens everyone! I’ve heard that Turnip greens rival kale in health benefits. Some field Kale coming along with our Storage Potatoes and Carrots. These storage crops will finish up soon as we begin to bring on the new and fresh. Cheers to #localANDorganic!” Ben, Jessie & the crew
“Everdale is back with early bunched carrots! This will be the last week until the field carrots are ready which are coming along nicely! We’ll also have spinach, salad mix, arugula, spicy salad mix, baby kale, beet greens, spring radish, salad turnips, cilantro and storage roots. We’ll also have limited amounts of romaine head lettuce and green onions!” Kyle Warren
“Knuckle Down Farm will be bringing rapini this week for a June treat as well as some picturesque and tender lettuce, bulk baby kale (remember byo bags!) and herbs.” Jenny Cook
Welcome back to Jason Kun and the wildly popular Island Oysters! Fans can look forward to three kinds: Malpeques from PE!, Kusshis from BC, and Acadian Gold from NB. If you’ve never tried fresh oysters, Jason’s an excellent teacher. You’ll go from nervous newbie to connoisseur level in no time!
After lots of labour and loving preparation, equipment breakdown forced Nadia of Hungry Vegan to delay until this week. She’ll have wonderful vegan fare to eat at the market or take home. Look for her tent next to the ChocoSol truck up top.
Down on the lower path, you’ll find Rebecca and Teneile of Life in Homemade, with gluten-free breads, buns and pizza dough, as well as nut and seed milks.
Please show our new vendors a warm Dufferin welcome!
There will be less Park Bread than usual this week, so shop early if you are counting on your favourite loaf.
Knife sharpening by Mike Fohr this time and all through June.
Ramembert to stop by Best Baa‘s table for this week’s special: $6.00 Ramembert cheeses! Regularly $7.25. (Sorry, I really like cheese jokes.)
There are lots of choices for the barbeque from Marvellous Edibles. As well as the classic cuts, there are lesser-known, great value options that are flavourful and versatile. Ask Jens for advice: a farmer who’s also a chef is a great resource!
It’s such a wonderful time of year at the market. We’ll look forward to seeing you, rain or shine!
Anne Freeman
