More Veggies than you can Shake a Stick at

This is one of those weeks when you’ll need a wheelbarrow to get all the items you want home from the market! So hard to choose with such an assortment. How about  just one of each…?

The Shared Harvest list: “We will have calalloo, beans, ground cherries, cherry tomatoes, lemon cucumbers, slicing cucumbers, pickling cucumbers, peppers, eggplants, parsley, onions, garlic, persian basil, italian basil, tulsi (sacred basil), zucchini, beets, carrots and purslane.” Kevin Hamilton

The Sosnicki Organic Produce contribution: “We are loaded with cherry tomatoes! For this one week only (SORRY about the plastic!) they are being sold in our branded clams. They were too ripe to send to the stores, but perfect for fresh eating! Next week we’ll pick into the paper pints again, promise 😉 We have our Sweet Onions, Blonde and regular Cucs (we bring as many as we can, sorry no orders for bushels. Just pop by and see what Ben has. He will bring as many cases as we harvest today), Heirloom Tomatoes are amazing and a couple new kinds this year, one called “Godzilla” lol, fresh dug Yukon Gold Potatoes, Kale, maybe a few groovy Eggplant, Corn? Maybe…. it’s at the very cusp of ripeness so they may do a search tomorrow morning to see if we can pull some for Dufferin! I guess you’ll just have to venture to market to find out for sure! Garlic! Lots and lots of garlic! We are trimming it out now. Our Watermelons start next week!” Jess, Ben & crew.

From Everdale Farm Manager Wolf Chrapko (shown up top with a slightly large-ish beet): “Here’s what we’ve got going on: basil, rainbow bunched beets, red bunched beets, broccoli, callaloo, rainbow carrots, orange carrots, rainbow chard, cilantro, English cucumbers, field cucumber, dill, bulb fennel, bunched flowers, black kale, green kale, red kale, kohlrabi, head lettuce, fresh yellow onion, fresh red onions, green onions, parsley, new potatoes, salad mix, salad turnips, spinach, cherry tomatoes, slicing tomatoes, and zucchini!

From Jenny Cook: “Many of you know that this Spring Knuckle Down Farm welcomed baby Max, hooray! What some of you might not know that farmer Jenny runs the farm on her own. Not surprisingly, a Spring baby posed a few challenges! Lots of people stepped in the lend a hand, including our friends and country neighbours over at Footstep Organics, who generously grew out our tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. This meant we didn’t have to worry about keeping them alive in those early newborn days and could focus on the new baby. Needless to say, when Footstep Organics said they had too many melons, I thought the least I could do is bring some to market, a win for all of us! That means that along with lots of lovely garlic this week, Knuckle Down Farm will have Cantaloupes!”

From Urban Harvest: “I will be bringing lots of seeds as fall planting is becoming much more popular. I will also have body care if not all the moisturizers just yet.” Colette

Forbes Wild Foods will have fresh chanterelles from Nova Scotia and fresh wild blueberries from North Eastern Ontario.

Sweet Seduction Bakery will be joining us again, with pies, tarts and more. Please give them lots of feedback so they can bring what you’re dreaming of!

Speaking of sweet dreams, here’s the news from Debbie Wiecha of Niagara Lavender: “we have another wonderful load of peaches for this week ….full of flavour and juicy.”

Nikki Daley from Boomerang Bags and her team of volunteers will be setting up the makings of reusable beeswax & cotton food wraps. Stop by and make your own!

P.S. We’ve got a stellar crop of sticks in the park which didn’t go unnoticed by Erika and Andrew McIlmoyle’s son last Thursday. While his Mom was busy selling mushrooms, he set up a nice stand behind the ‘senior’ vendors, complete with baskets and bags. (Note how extra stock is neatly stored beneath the table–good style!) The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree….Unfortunately Waymac has to miss this week’s market.

I’ll be absent this week, and our wonderful Market Assistant, Nicole Jacobs, will be looking after things.
